Frank

PDF Print E-mail

Frank – A handstamp or machine cancel showing that postage has been prepaid. Modern franking machines allow use by private companies after paying in advance and allows the franking of mail until the meter recording the amount of money unused registers zero. This has also given rise to another term “Meter cancel” meaning the same thing. In the days before stamps a frank was a mark or signature which would indicate that the item being carried had nothing to pay by the receiver.
