Dogsled Mail

Dogs were used to deliver mail when pulling a dogsled. Mail carried by dogs, saw limited use in the northern parts of Alaska during the early ears of the 20th century.

In the early ears of Alaska Settlement, there was no regular mail service to the interior post offices during the winter months, although individuals might agree to transport letters to coastal areas and they carried mail by dogsled.

In 1910s, the regular mail service has begun. In 1930s, airplanes are begun to be used for carrying mail, but postmasters were still allowed to use dogs for 'Emergency Mail Service'.

In 1963, the last regular scheduled dog team route was shut down.
