Pigeon post |

The Egyptians and the Persians first used carrier pigeons 3,000 years ago. Homing pigeons are used to carry messages, which are called Pigeon Post. As a method of communication, it is likely as old as the ancient Persians from whom the art of training the birds probably came.
While telegraphy evolved, Paul Julius Reuter first founded the Reuters News Agency in Aachen which transferred messages between Brussels and Aachen using carrier pigeons. This was the missing link to connect Berlin and Paris. The carrier pigeons were much faster than the post train, giving Reuter faster access to stock news from the Paris stock exchange. In 1851, Paul Julius Reuter opened an office in the City of London which transmitted stock market quotations between London and Paris via the new Calais to Dover cable. In India, Tippu Sultan used carrier pigeons. They returned to the Jamia Masjid mosque in Srirangapatna, which was his headquarters. The pigeon holes may be seen in the mosque's minarets to this day. - Mrs. Nagalakshmi Tadakaluri, Philatelist. |
