Topical Collecting is very popular, and there seems to be no limit to the number of topics available on the stamps of the world. Topical collecting merely means that you collect stamps having to do with some specific thing. For example, music on stamps is a topic that is most popular. This topical selection may be further broken down into actual musical notes shown on stamps musical instruments pictured, or the musicians themselves. Still finer divisions may be made by collecting stamps picturing only composers or only musical artists.
Birds, animals, reptiles, mammals or a specific mammal, such as horses or monkeys or almost any mammal you can think of, one country or another is sure to have printed a stamp with the animal you wish depicted on it. Flowers are popular, and these again may be divided into wild flowers, cultivated flowers, orchids, etc. Buildings, ships, famous people, Presidents, children, maps, flags etc. you have your pick of literally dozens of topics around which to build and excellent collection. There are dealers throughout the world specializing in topical stamps, and they offer a service in topical as they are issued. You subscribe to the services, and they either notify you or send you the stamps as they come out. This way you are made aware of the topical you want to collect as they are printed, and you do not miss any countries that might otherwise escape your notice. Olympic Games stamps are a good topic to collect and many countries have issued stamps commemorating the different Olympics throughout the years. - Mrs. Nagalakshmi Tadakaluri, Philatelist. |
