Royal Mail Commemorative Sheets

Royal mail has introduced yet another new product to add to its already bulging range of products. They are called “Commemorative Sheets” and the first one went on sale on the 1st of April, while another is planned for later in the year. Royal mail has stated that they are intended to commemorate “anniversaries that never quite made it into the stamp programme.”

They are A4 in size, and look identical to the controversial smiler sheets, but these are fully endorsed and produced by Royal Mail. The sheet consists of the usual format of ten first class stamps with commemorative labels with a large border.

The price is £13.50, and they are only available from the Philatelic Bureau, which means the postage charges bump the price up to £15. The value of the stamps is only £3.60, so the profit for Royal Mail, per sheet is £11.50. The chances of anybody actually using the stamps for postage is very slim, so really the entire cost is pure profit for Royal Mail.

The issue is limited to 10,000 sheets, and demand is expected to be high. Because the items are being sold at well over face value, they are not being considered as true postage stamps, and hence will not be listed in most normal catalogues.
