Who's Who in Philately: Antonio Maceo

PDF Print E-mail
Antonio Maceo, whose portrait adorns the 50c stamp of the 1915 series of Cuba, was a mulatto who rose to the rank of General soon after joining the Cuban army. He was born in 1848 and at the age of 20 years enlisted under Gomez and served during the ten-year war.

During the war he gained several victories, but was finally forced to surrender. He escaped from his conquerors and went to Costa Rica, where he remained until 1888.

At this time the old fighting spirit overpowered him and he returned to Santiago to stir up a new revolution. Failing in this exploit he again fled, but returned at the outbreak of the revolt in 1895. He again associated himself with his old commander, Gomez. He led his troops and gained many victories during the next two years, among the most notable of his accomplishments being the leading of his troops to Pinar del Rio, a province where he was almost invincible and could not be dislodged fro his point of vantage by his opponent, Weyler.

However, his good fortune could not last and in a skirmish near Mariel, on December 2, 1896, he received wounds from which he could not recover, and died on the battle-field.

His brother, Jose, who accompanied him through his travels, predeceased him by five months, having been killed in battle on July 5th of the same year.

Mrs. Nagalakshmi Tadakaluri, Philatelist.
