Braille Stamps

Canada will shortly be releasing a set of Braille stamps, due to be issued on the 21st April, coinciding with the 100th Anniversary of the Montreal Association for the Blind. The stamps celebrate guide dogs for the blind and has the rate printed in both ink and Braille.

Canada is not the first country to issue stamps containing messages, as the technique was first employed in the UK in 1993. In was part of a security measure on a £10 stamp, and the high value justified the added anti counterfeit method.

A leading Canadian newspaper ran the story along with comments from readers, and most were very positive about the stamps. One reader, who had been blind for over twenty years, complimented the designs as a good promotional tool for the blind association, but said the postal services were still a long way off from being accessible to the blind, although it was a good start. The Canadian post office responded by stating that they are still looking at other ways to “remain at the forefront of postal technology advances for the blind.”
