Schools Drop Support For Stamp Clubs

PDF Print E-mail
Back in the 1950s-60s, stamp collecting was a popular hobby and records show that around 85% of schools had active stamp clubs for students. Some were supported by the school, some by students and teachers, and some by outside stamp clubs and associations. This was at a time when stamp collecting was seen as a good hobby and becoming involved was cheap and easy.

A recent study at the end of last year into school clubs and hobbies, show that only 4% of schools have a stamp club or any association with one. The figure is staggeringly different from 50-60 years ago, and shows how the hobby has greatly declined amongst the young. It is hard to make comparisons further as accurate records are not available. One comparison that can be made shows that schools in both decades had a 100% rate of running sport associated clubs. The number of members, worked out as a percentage of school pupils using the clubs, has fallen by 72% in the past years. Another sign that hobbies are changing rapidly!

The future of stamp collecting still remains unclear, as the generation of video game players takes over. It is easy to blame schools for the decline in available clubs as prompted by the Philatelic Association, but the education authorities fight back with the argument that there are just not enough interested students to support the clubs. Time will only tell how the hobby continues through the next decades.
