Horses – 1978

PDF Print E-mail

This issue was released on the 5th July 1978 and consisted of a set of four stamps designed by Patrick Oxenham. The 9p depicted a Shire Horse, 10 1/2p Shetland Pony, 11p Welsh Pony and the 13p Thoroughbred.

The issue was prompted by the centenary of the Shire Horse Society of England and the famous animal painter Patrick Oxenham was chosen to submit designs for the stamps, following the success of his previous wildlife issues.

The Shire Horse shown on the 9p comes from a Gloucestershire farm close to the artists home and is an old friend of his. The Shetland featured on the 10 1/2p is also a local pony, although the Welsh Pony from the 11p, was from material supplied by the Welsh Pony Society. The Thoroughbred from the 13p is the only horse that didn’t exist, but was instead a composite taken from several sources to capture all the points of the breed.
