Canada will shortly be releasing a set of Braille stamps, due to be issued on the 21st April, coinciding with the 100th Anniversary of the Montreal Association for the Blind. The stamps celebrate guide dogs for the blind and has the rate printed in both ink and Braille.

The concept of sending a postcard through the post may seem like the starting point for setting up a postal service but in fact it did not appear until many years later. The use of sending a piece of card instead of the conventional paper enclosed envelope was originally suggested by Dr Heinrich Von Stephan. He was then the Postmaster General of Prussia and proposed the idea in 1856, but it was never implemented and soon forgotten about.

The penny black is the most famous of all stamps, and commands a high price. In philatelic terms it is a very common stamp, but the fact it is the first stamp ever produced has meant that it is in high demand all over the world.

.Royal Mail has issued a set of stamps celebrating the bravery of lifeboat crews across the country and were issued on the 13th March. The crew from the Barra Royal National Lifeboat Institute in the western isles are depicted on one of the stamps in the set, called Mayday – Rescue At Sea.

Apparently, China has unwittingly become embroiled in a legal action featuring a set of stamps depicting the Chinese practice of using animals to represent calendar years. It is believed to be another attempt to sabotage the Olympics in 2008 and a protest against Chinas human rights laws. The facts cannot be confirmed and therefore the allegations may not be accurate.

Back in the 1950s-60s, stamp collecting was a popular hobby and records show that around 85% of schools had active stamp clubs for students. Some were supported by the school, some by students and teachers, and some by outside stamp clubs and associations. This was at a time when stamp collecting was seen as a good hobby and becoming involved was cheap and easy. |
