Error – stamps which have something abnormal when compared with a normal stamp of the same design.

1. Colour – stamps printed in the wrong colour.
2. Design – stamps where an error occurs in the design such as a misspelling or an inverted flag.
3. Paper – stamps printed on the wrong paper either by oversight or perhaps in when the usual paper was not available.
4. Perforation – stamps perfed at the wrong gauge or in the wrong place or not perfed on one or more sides when they should have been.
5. Printing – stamps with double printing, inverted printing etc caused by incorrectly feeding the paper into the printer.
6. Plate – stamps with errors caused by incorrect plate construction, for example an inverted centre or frame.
7. Watermark – stamps printed on the wrong paper (see 3) very often have the wrong watermark particularly if the watermark is a number relating to the value of the stamp. Another error occurs when part of the watermark design on the dandy roll is itself wrong. Watermarks normally appear upright and readable when viewed from the front of the stamp. However, some stamps are printed normally with the watermark sideways or inverted (eg booklets) & errors occur when the paper is fed in incorrectly and the watermark appears in a different way from the stamps printed normally.
