Backstamp – normally a hand applied circular date stamp applied to the reverse of an envelope or other postal item to indicate when it was received either at a transit office or at the office of final destination. On a much traveled cover the various transit marks/cancels will enable a collector to work out the route and time taken for the letter etc to reach its destination.
