A set of commemorative stamps has been released, to celebrate the "Holy Glory” of the great cathedrals of the UK. They were prompted by complaints from the church for the lack of religious stamps currently issued. It was traditional that Christmas Stamps contained a religious theme, but this has not always been the case over the past few years. A set of five stamps, ranging from 48p to 81p, feature cathedral interiors from Belfast, Gloucester, St Davids, Westminster and St Magnus in Orkney. A single larger, first class stamp, features Lichfield Cathedral, while a special full-colour four-stamp miniature sheet of St Paul's Cathedral completes the set. The miniature sheet contains two 1st class and two 81p stamps, and marks the 300th anniversary of the completion of the London landmark. The stamps, described by the Royal Mail as a "philatelic pilgrimage", show the interiors of the cathedrals photographed in black and white, and form a very eye catching set. First day covers and postmarks have been made available from all the pictured cathedrals, as well as the usual philatelic outlets. |
