| Goodbye To Stamp Hinges? |

Trials are underway in America involving a new type of stamp hinge, designed to prevent the damage that current gummed hinges produce. There are two types of hinges, both based around the concept of a "sticky" hinge, which is completely removable and leaves no lasting trace. They are currently being tested with different stamps and paper, and the first reports indicate they work perfectly with "most" modern stamps. Older stamps with old style paper have caused some concern. One style of hinge is designed for used stamps, and a softer version is for mint stamps, with the intention of keeping the gum perfectly intact. The first indication is that the softer version works with all mint stamps, and no problems have yet been reported. Stamp "scientists" are also reportedly working on a hinge for self adhesive stamps, which is basically a backing cover for the stamp. It will protect the sticky side of the stamp, but can be removed at any time. Experts are still debating if a self adhesive stamp removed from its backing paper, is still considered to be a mint stamp. For most collectors the backing paper would never be removed and is collected along with the stamp. Many collectors believe that a self adhesive stamp is used as soon as it is transfered to any other surface. The debate continues! Mark Steele.
