| Burma Stamps Destroyed |

Unconfirmed reports are circulating within the news agencies, that a new issue of Burmese stamps has been completely destroyed in the recent cyclones which have devastated so much of the country. The government or postal officials have made no comment on the issue, but speculation has suggested that the entire issue will be scrapped and a charity stamp could be issued in its place. It has not been confirmed that the stamps were destroyed in the cyclone, as rumours suggest, but a statement was made claiming “To issue commemorative stamps during this national disaster would be insensitive and any plans are on hold. A charity stamp is being considered, although government consultation is yet to take place.” Stamp experts do not have details of any such issues that may have been destroyed, and are considered by some to be propaganda, purely to raise the value of stamps that still do exist. A statement claimed “Large numbers of existing stamps have been confirmed destroyed, and the rumours of the new issue could be false. Either way it will raise the value of existing stamps to collectors.“ Mark Steele |
