Missing Stamp Mystery. PDF Print E-mail
The mystery surrounds an issue from Swaziland, produced in 1956. It was a pictorial definitive, with the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, in values for postage/revenue up to £1. However the set also included a £5 revenue stamp in the design that had had previously been used for the King George V and George VI definitives.

The Crown Agents Archives, which were recently opened, reveal that 12,000 of the stamps were printed and used, and the remaining stocks were surcharged on the introduction of decimal currency in 1961. But for some unknown reason none of the examples have ever been seen!

Nobody knows what has happened to the stamps, or if they in fact were ever released, although records show 12,000 were printed and confirmed. One perforated specimen copy exists in the Bradbury Wilkinson Archive, and one mint example is now in the British Library in London. So far, nobody has been able to shed any light on the mystery.
