The Austrian Postal Authority is about to release a revolutionary stamp to celebrate the UEFA EURO 2008 football tournament. The stamp uses lenticular technology to produce a movie on a stamp. 48 separate images of a TV recording are superimposed on the stamp, giving the optical effect of a film sequence of approximately 3 seconds. The technology has been refined, but still remains expensive for mass production. The Austrian stamp features a goal scored by Andi Herzog, Austria’s record breaking international player. The goal was scored against Sweden in the 76th minute on 6th September 1997, and paved the way for Austria’s entry into the World Championships in France the following year. The goal has gained legendary status over the following years. The plan was to bring back the team spirit from the 1990’s back to the hearts of today’s players and football enthusiasts. The stamp is the most technologically sophisticated stamp of all time. It is also the largest one, measuring 6.5 by 4.7 cm. Understandably, it is also the most expensive stamp ever made, its nominal value being 5.45 euros. |
