This issue was a set of four values released on the 6th June 1979, and was designed by Stuart Rose. The issue features horse racing paintings in a commemoration of the 200th Derby, the first race of which was run on 4th May 1780 at Epson Downs. The 9p is entitled “Saddling Mahmoud for the Derby” painted by Sir Alfred Munnings in 1936. The 10 1/2p is from an aquatint and shows the first Grand National at Aintree, entitled “The Liverpool Great National Steeple Chase” Painted by F.C Turner in 1839. The 11p features Newmarket and is entitled “The First Spring Meeting, Newmarket” by J.N. Sartorius in 1793. The 13p is entitled “Racing at dorsett Ferry, Windsor” and shows King Charles II shown watching the race, painted by Francis Barlow in 1684. The presentation pack released by the post office also included an insert with cartoons especially commissioned from the renowned artist Norman Thelwell. Mark Steele |
