European Assembly Elections – 1979 PDF Print E-mail

This issue was released on the 9th May and were a set of four stamps designed by Stafford Cliff. The designs all show hands placing the flags of the member nations into the ballot boxes.

The issue commemorated the first Direct Elections to the European Assembly. The flags shown on the stamps are those of Britain, France, Denmark, Belgium, West Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Ireland and Luxembourg. These stamps were the first issues designed by Stafford Cliff, and won him a design award the following year.

There are rumours, which cannot be confirmed, that the initial printing of the stamps were scrapped, as the colours were not perfect, which resulted in some flags being discoloured. It was believed this may anger residents of the corresponding countries and the stamps were re-designed to ensure only pure colours were used and no bleeding of the design could occur. The rumours originate from employees responsible for printing the stamps, although the Post Office never made any official statements to that effect.
